Apostle James Son of Alpheus
We celebrate James, the apostle and Son of Alpheus, on October 9th. It is difficult to say what we know about this James. Particularly because there are many other people named James (or as it should be translated, Jacob) in the New Testament.
Some people theorize that James Son of Alpheus is one and the same as James, the brother of Our Lord. Even if they are wrong, now is a good time to check out that article, as we discuss the meaning and epistemology of James/Jacob in the New Testament. The James we do know more about is James the brother of John.
One thing we do know about this James the Apostle is that he preached in Damascus.

O holy Apostle, James, intercede with the merciful God, to grant to our souls forgiveness of sins.
Kontakion: (tone 2)
With praises let us all extol James as a herald of God, he planted firmly the doctrines of wisdom in the souls of the godly. For he stands before the Master’s throne of glory, and rejoices with the angels unceasingly praying for all of us.
Prokeimenon: (tone 3)
Their utterance goes forth from the ends of the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Verse: The heavens tell of the glory of God, and the firmament declares the work of His hand.
